Water Sort Puzzle: 12 Tips to Beat Levels Without Restarting

Twelve concrete water sort tactics: pour ordering, empty-tube discipline, colour counting and the endgame patterns that decide hard levels.

Once you're past the tutorial levels, water sort stops rewarding speed and starts rewarding order of operations. These are the tactics that change win rates.

Before you move

1. Count the segments. Every colour appears exactly four times. If you can see three greens on the board, the fourth is buried somewhere, and knowing that stops you wasting an empty tube looking for it.

2. Read the whole board first. The strongest move is often in a tube you haven't looked at. Ten seconds of scanning beats five undos.

3. Find the forced moves. Some pours are legal in exactly one way. Make them first; they cost you no flexibility and they simplify what's left.

During the midgame

4. Complete before you consolidate, consolidate before you excavate. This ordering resolves most "which move first" questions on its own.

5. Treat empty tubes as one-time currency. Spend one only when you can name the move it unlocks.

6. Watch for partial pours. If the destination has room for two and your source has a run of three, one segment gets stranded on top of something you may not want to disturb. Check capacity before you tap.

7. Never bury a colour you've nearly finished. Covering three-of-a-kind with a stray segment turns a one-move completion into a three-move recovery.

8. Prefer pours that reduce the number of distinct colours showing. Fewer visible colours means more legal moves next turn. This is the closest thing water sort has to a general heuristic.

9. Keep a mental "next two moves". If a pour doesn't lead anywhere, it's usually not the pour to make, even when it's legal and looks tidy.

The endgame

10. Solve the scarcest colour last. The colour scattered across the most tubes needs the most room to gather, so leave yourself the space for it.

11. Two colours, two tubes, wrong order is still winnable — as long as you have one empty tube. Pour one colour out entirely, then rebuild. Without that empty tube it isn't, which is why tip 5 matters.

12. If a level takes more than three attempts, restart rather than undo. Untangling a board you've already compromised is slower than replaying a clean one, and you'll see the layout differently the second time.

Protect your options

Every tip above is a version of the same idea: protect your options. Water sort punishes moves that feel productive but reduce what you can do next turn: filling tubes to depth three, parking colours "for now", splitting a nearly-done stack.

Play the next level asking one question before each tap: does this leave me more moves or fewer? You'll clear levels you previously restarted, and you'll stop needing undo as a crutch.
